I was given a 1984 Ford F250 with the 460 engine equiped with the
California emmissions compliment that has not been altered. I have
the Haynes manual for this series of truck, but it is very
generalized. I want to give it my best shot before I take it to a
mechanic (actually tow it to a mechanic!).
The truck starts, idles and has good throttle response when in park,
nuetral and low gear. Once it is in high gear and part throttle it
acts like it is flooding and dies. Part throttle cruising is not an
option in this truck. I'm pretty sure from the studying I've done
that it involves some component in the emmissions system. I suspect
the EGR valve or the feedback solenoid to the carb if this truck even
has it. The emmissions acronyms are undeciferable when compared to
the info in the Haynes Manual. I've been able to identify some of
the emmissions components, but a few are still eluding me. This
truck has the PCV valve to the air cleaner, the air pump, an airpump
intake assembly that is not shown in the Haynes Manual (it delivers
fresh air to the rear of the heads) and also has the two canisters
which I believe are typical for the two fuel tank versions of this
truck. It also has the temperature operated valve that isolates
vaccuum from the distributor, they both port to the manifold with one
going through a restrictor. The EGR is located in back of the carb
without the cooler. This is a non-catalytic convertor vehicle.
I think this problem is isolated to one or two individual emmission
components and I am reluctant to start throwing parts at it until I
can narrow it down.
Can you help?
Thanks,
Denny
