I have a 1988 Bronco II, 2 wd, 2.9L V-6, this model has 2 fuel pumps, a low pressure pump in the tank and a high pressure pump on the frame under the drivers side. I have a strange problem I'd like to have anyones opinion on. The problem is that my Bronco quits occasionally, it sounds as if it has run out of gas. It seems that when the outside temperature rises above 75 degrees it occurs more often. I've replaced the fuel filter, fuel pump relay, and distributor pickup coil & module and it still quits on occasion. The local Ford dealer can not find the problem. I've listened to the fuel pumps and they are working. After my Bronco quits I let it set for about 10-15 minutes and then it will run fine again - thats why I first thought it was a rely or module problem, but it doesn't appear to be. Can it be one of the fuel pumps going bad when it heats up? Anybody had a similar problem? If so please help me ASAP !!

If there is a fuel pressure regulator in the assembly, it is your likely suspect. Instead of keeping the pressure steady, if the diaphram or spring inside it is weak or worn out, the pressure will drop. Also, if it's vaccum actuated, you might have a vacuum leak that is affecting it.

I read through the replies and I think you could still need to replace the fuel pump... Check Fuel pump pressure... A weak electric fuel pump can vapor lock. Just because they make noise doesn't mean they are pumping the required amount of pressure.
