Has anyone ever done this swap. Have a 1988 4X4 Ranger 2.9L with a cracked head. Engine has 187000 on it so head replace is not worth it. Have little funds for another 2.9. A friend is willing to give me a 2.8 from a 84 ranger. Can this swap be done. Thanks for any help.

Probably, but you will need the tranny also. I wouldn't do it, the 2.9 runs much better than the 2.8 in stock form. I had the 2.8 and wished I could trade to the 2.9 but that would have meant computers and wiring harnesses and....oh forget it!
