Since you have checked all the obvious causes perhaps you should consider a problem with the electrics or the sensor. Recently I kept getting a check break pads message but as they had recently been replaced I was almost certain the breaks were ok. In the end the sensor had to be replaced.

Do you have anti-lock brakes? I ask because my parents brake light kept coming on and it ended up being something to do with the anti lock on the brakes.

I've never had that particular problem with the brake lights before, but I've had other things go screwy with my Escort. I'd definitely have the sensors checked and make sure all the wiring is okay.

Thanks for the help, I did check and my brake lights are working, I even called the service department at the dealership where I purchased the car and they told me to turn the key to the on position but not start the car and see if it would go into neutral, but still nothing.

Fiddle with the e-brake lever, the switch in there is prone to dirt, spills, coins, etc. Also check the fluid level sensor in the master.
