Hi, I have a 94 Xlt, 3.0v6, 5spd, 160k miles. I commute about 320 miles per wk with it. I put new rotors on about 2 yrs ago. About 9wks ago, the rotors were turned and new pads installed. Recently, I noticed a noise (low-freq growl) coming from the front when I apply the brakes. I lifted the front and spun the wheels, I found that both wheels have a spot where the rotor/pads bind. It would seem that the rotors have a warp in them. Is this what is causing the noise? What would cause this so soon? Is this a common trait with the 94 model? Should I take back to the shop and have the rotors turned again? thanks, Chris

Were the tires / wheels rotated recently? At times (not always) uneven torque can warp a rotor. Maufacture recommends useing a torque wrench. Tire shops use a torque socket. Just a idea.

Warping is caused by 1 thing. Heat What causes the heat? Excessive breaking (we know you haven't been doing that) Break pads sticking (cheap breaks) Get the tapered kind Master cylinder sticking Break piston sticking The last is the most common. The breaks system should be flushed (vacum out the resivour and fill with new then bleed the system until you get clean fluid.) You may want to get rebuild kits for the cylinder. After break release, they should back out to a certain distance. They don't usually know what this gap is, and just use the "if it doesn't scrub" method, which works sometimes. Honestly they won't give your money back but will re-turn the rotars and then charge you for a rebuild/flush. Use the same place, ask them to fix the cause. Chris Robertson c_robertson@...
