Yesterday, my intake craked behind the alternator. The mechanic said this was common. Is this true? The car has less than 50k on it, all stock except for a k&n, and isn't beat on. What gives?

I think that your year was under a recall for this exact problem. There are re-call databases on some stang web sites; corral.net, mustangworld.com, americanmustang.com. I don't remember off hand, but check it out and see if the '97 is included.

There was a recall on those intakes on the '97. You should inquire about it at the dealership
