I needed my 4 wheel drive yesterday for the first time in a long time and it isn't working. Indicator light on dash comes on when I shift the transfer case but there is no power going to the front wheels. Truck is a 99 with 147000 miles on it. 5.4L with auto transmission. In August a ford dealer installed a new/rebuilt automatic transmission. I have to confess I didn't check to see if the 4 wheel drive worked after I picked it up or not. Truck drives fine, never knew there was a problem until I needed to lock in the front transfer case. The truck was towed to the dealer by a wrecker company, is it possible something was damaged then? Anyone with ideas to check? I'm not an auto mechanic but am reasonably mechanical (industrial machine repair) so if its something I could fix myself I'd rather try than pay a dealer. Thanks, Pat

Pat, I do know that you 4x4 will fail if you dont use it.  in the summer we dont use ours much, so I try to put it in on my way home from town.  13 miles of gravel helps keep things lubed. I wonder tho, when they replaced the trannie that something didnt get hooked up correctly.  you may have to spend a bit of time on the floor and do some hands on looking.  all those switches are electronic, so you may have to refer to the book.  Hope you have one.  We have one for our 77 F250, or rather we did, before the shop burned down.  need to replace all our shop manuals.  you may have to return to the mechanic and ask him to go back over everything. hope it helps.
