I'm looking at these Air rams and thinking "Yeah my car will sound cool, but how will it affect the air mass sensor?". Has any one had bad experiences with these air rams? my friend has one on his 1.8l integra and it doesn't cause any problems but could the focus be different? BTW my stock ZX3 kicks the s**t out of his 92 acura going from 0-60mph. Man but when we got up to 115mph his kept going to 125mph! I guess that would figure since his is a manual

i don't think a focus can go over 108mph with out a new chip... and if you put your car with a modded chip up to 115 with your stock tires you're going to die. the tires are rated up to 115 or 110, and the chip is there so ford won't have problems iwth tires falling apart at some ungodly speed.

anyways, i love it as much as the next guy, but speed definitley kills. besides, if you want to go fast bring it to a track.

evan

Your right on the track thing. The trouble is it's hard to get time out at SIR (Seattle) and it costs $$$ and lots of it. Also we've been fighting for a public track for all of those who show up around 11:45 in Kent.

BTW, The guage was reading 115, I should note that I tried to do it a second time and only got to 105.

You might not have to get a new chip, but I would consult a few Ford Dealer's first (more than one cause one may tell you some B.S.) Any sorta of air induction upgrade is good but the most significant gain is only going to be seen if it is done in conjunction with a an upgrade to your exhaust. Everything from the headers on back should be upgraded (if you can afford this). They just released a performance cat. converter (goes between the headers and the exhaust pipe) at www.focusperformance.com which is a rare find. just cahnge the air intake will gain 1-5 hp. in most cases without exhaust upgrades. Best bet is to change out your muffler when you change your intake. Follow-up with headers, then the cat. replacement.

P.S. I hit the limiter (or governor) in my Zx3 doing 123 mph on the freeway (CA 60 West) while tailing a BMW who was doing the same. It was fun till I hit the limiter, then the engine reved out till my speed dropped to 110, and then it returned throttle control. I'd love to see how fast this thing'll go but like you said it is better left for the track. :D

Before you go drop a coin on a new air intake, I'd look into which type will help eliminate "heat soak". Most of those exposed cone type filters breath hot air from your engine compartment. Hot air is the LAST thing you want. Look at how rally cars or touring cars have their set up. If you are concerned about the MAS, just disconnect the battery before install and reconnect after. The computer should adjust itself.

My worry is the MAS detecting too much air coming in and choking the engine. I had this problem with my brothers 86' doge raider (two door montero). Maybe I'm just worrying to much.

A lot has happened in the way of technology since '86. I dont think you will have a problem.

The pictures are in the album under "OBX intake"

Where do I start? First I got an OBX short Intake off of Ebay for about $100 with 2-day air shipping. I installed the intake last night. It all took about 1hr 20min from pulling the car into the garage to wiping the finger smudges off the chrome once it was intalled. The first big problem with the install was there where no instructions! But I lucked out and one of my mechanic type friends showed up out of no where and offered to help, oh man was I lucky. The intake came with all the parts to install and then some. Is it a bad thing that I have parts left over? As for the install its self there was only one real problem. The vacuum hose was a little small in diameter. That was quickly over come with a lighter, adjustable crescent wrench and some wet black. I'm very satisfied with the intake, it sounds good, looks good, and I'm getting better gas mileage! There is no real performance boost though, but I was told not to expect my focus to become some WRC car with just an intake ;) And now that this is done it will be on to a CAT back borla exhaust and a JBA header. I hope to get this all done before summer. Catch you all later and thanks for the input!
