I have a 95 base probe with a 2.0 liter which I purchased about 3 months ago. The belts were replaced when I had bought it. Just recently they started squealing when I start the car or when I sit at idle or at a red light with the head lights on. When this happens the volt meter in the dash falls out of the normal area and into the low. I heard that this happens because of two reasons. Either the belt is too loose or the alternator is not spinning fast enough. Is this true or is there another reason? If this is could I fix this myself and how much will it cost? Tim, Sounds like your alternator belt is loose. Check the tension on the belt by trying to press it with your finger (I know, it's a tight fit). The belt should deflect not more than 1 inch. If it deflects more than that, you'll need to tighten the belt (assuming the belt is the correct length). You do that by loosening the alternator fasteners, then use the adjuster to move the alternator away from the engine. It's really tight in there, so it helps to have small hands (I don't). If the belt is tight, you may have some contaminants on the engine and/or alternator pulleys which you'll have to clean off. Hope this helps. Aloha, Mike 1994 base w/5 spd >
