I have an 89 Thunderbird(v6) with a very broken AODE tranny. I have an AOD out of an 86 Ford van(v8). Can I put this in the 89 bird? The bellhousing bolt pattern is the same, but are there other issues that may arise? Are there other trannies that I can use other than the AODE? I've done auto to T-5 swaps, but never AODE to AOD. Would anyone know if this would work? Or... do I really need to go to the wrecking yard and pick up another AODE?

Thank you very much for your information now that I sounded like a complete idiot. I do not know the history of this car as I just received it... wrecked. The information that I provided was the information that was provided to me. I will be looking in to the link you provided. I do know that the tranny is history. Thanks again.

first of there are different aod's and a ford van will probably have a different tail shaft than the thunderbird. the 4R70W tranny in the t-birds is an aod-e that only denotes an electronically controled transmission the 4R70W is just a wide ratio varient. your best bet is to find a j-yard tranny but there is a differnece in the mounts between the 89-90 aod for the mn12 and the 91-93 tranny the lower trans bolts are a difffert size. as for a 5 spd conversion that is more of a headach than it is worth. the tranny from asuper coupe will bolt up to a 3.8 but 5.0 the t5 tranny tail shaft is too short.
