I think AOD's have the right bell housing bolt pattern, but you will have to find a 28 oz flywheel with a ring gear that will fit the starter. Look for a flywheel out of an 81 granada or an 84 thunderbird. 289 starters noses stickout about 1 1/4" from the flange, post '81 starters stick out an inch. 28 oz flywheels for 62-8? smallblocks have a weight about 3 1/2" wide, mine has 4 lightening holes drilled in it, late model flywheels (50 oz for the missing counterweight crankshafts on a 5.0 L) have a weight about 5" wide, mine has 2 holes drilled. You have got to get the flywheel weight right, I broke the tailshaft housing on the C4 automatic from the vibration by matching the starter instead of the weight. I have gotten away with using the wrong vibration damper on the front end of the motor, you should be able to use your old one. With an AOD, be sure to hook up the kickdown linkage properly to the carburator or they are reputed to burn up bands or clutches. AODE's are supposed to be more reliable, but you have to find a donor car harness to plug into the transmission and hook up a switch for the overdrive on your dashboard. You can get a custom length driveshaft cut down at most Spicer dealers, look in the truck parts listing in the phone book. Be sure to have the same angle front and back of the driveshaft to balance the vibration, and if you can't arrange that, get the driveshaft man to put a CV joint at the back end and set the front joint straight. There is a CV joint adaptor for a Ford 9" rear, I bought one from FleetRight in Clarksville In, it doesn't come from Spicer.
