The compressor isn't on all the time. it only comes on when the HVAC
(Heating, ventilation, air conditioning) control is moved to any position
other than OFF.
In non-A/C modes, the air conditioner cycles on and off every 30 seconds or
so to reduce humidity of the incoming air. In defog, the A/C is running
mostly full-time to take out as much moisture from the air as possible.
You can observe this by moving the HVAC control to any mode other than A/C
or defog, then lift the hood and watch the center hub of the compressor.
You'll hear the electromagnetic clutch click on and off and the center hub
can be seen spinning (meaning the compressor is on) when the clutch is
engaged. The hub stops spinning when the clutch releases.
