Has anyone installed this on their car and removed the resonator portion? I have recently put one on, but am surprised at the subdued sound it produces. I was wondering if I had the resonator portion replaced with straight pipe, if it would increase the sound and possibly result in better overall flow. Don't get me wrong, I love the exhaust, just wondering if I can improve it a little..........

Thanks for the help.

Hi Scott. I dont have one of these systems installed (I have a 99 Cougar), but I have a question about the Borla system you put on your car. Is it made specifically for the Base/SE , or is this for the PRobe GT and fits on the 2.0L as well. If it was for a GT, did you have to modify it to fit or did it bolt right on? Thanks P.S. How much did it cost? Trying to find a system for my bro's 96 SE, its either the Bosal ($495) or custom, but if the Borla fits for less.... Dedric R. dedric@...

DON'T USE A CATBACK SYSTEM MADE FOR THE PROBE GT. THE PIPE DIAMETER IS USUALLY 2.5" AND THE SE SHOULDN'T GO LARGER THAN 2.25". BY GOING TO THE LARGER DIAMETER PIPING, YOU LOSE LOW END POWER. STICK WITH ONE MADE FOR THE SE. PACESETTER MAKES A CATBACK FOR THE SE AND YOU CAN ORDER IT FROM NOPI FOR $149.95. I TALKED TO A GUY THAT HAS THIS SYSTEM AND HE LOVES IT. IT IS A STRAIGHT BOLT-ON AND HAS A ROLLED 4"TIP ALREADY WELDED ON. I WILL BE ORDERING MINE NEXT WEEK. CHRIS >

I have the Borla installed already and have lost nothing in the low end department.  I have gained all the way around as well as a smoother powerband/torque range.   I do not know about the diameter you speak of.  My 97 is stock at 2.25 and the Borla is the same size.

i didn't say the borla was 2.5" in diameter. i said don't buy a system that is made for the probe gt. the system you have is amde for the probe se. the gt system is 2.5" in diameter. if you like yours, that's great. i was just saying to buy one made for the 4 cyl and that there is a system available for a lot less. i personally looked into the other systems available for the 4 cyl., and decided to go with the pacesetter based on one of their customers and on the price. i could buy 3 pacesetter systems and still have money left over for the same price as those other systems. just giving another idea. not flaming anybody or any companies system. chris >

I just went and checked out that pacesetter cat back exhaust you were talking about, and it says that it is made for 3.0 liters. What the heck?? They make a 3 liter probe. Maybe just a typo. Let me know whether thats supposed to say 2.0 liter or not. If it is made for the base model, the price is so low it is kinda creepy. Never have i seen a cat-back for that cheap. Justin 96 base

that looks like one big huge typo. you can see it by going to www.ptuning.com i thought the price was really low too, that's why i found someone who has one. they said it is loud when you floor it and he has had it for a while and he loves it and gets tons of compliments. chris >

I have the Borla for the GT on my car and it is only 2 1/4" in diameter. Borla doesn't make one for the SE. Steve

The pace-setter is CHEAP!!!! It's not stainless, it will rust out. Yes the 1st Gen. Probes had 3.0L V-6 in the GT for certaun years. The Borla has a million mile warranty, it is a very good system. Steve

chris - are you sure the pacesetter catback exhaust will actually IMPROVE performance??? I heard all catback systems will decrease low end torque.. - Sergio >

I have heard that is the case only if you increase the pipe diameter too large.  I have improved mine all the way around by going with the Borla system.

Chris -
Sorry, I did not mean for it to sound like I was flaming either. I agree that it is best to go with a system that makes you happy.  I know some with the pacesetter and they love it also.  It is a decent system and is a great price.  The reason I went with the Borla system, which is only made for the GT, but will fit the base/SE, is because I got it for a good price brand new from a guy in my club who needed a larger diameter to install his turbo.

The Borla system is a little pricey, but it is very high quality and seems to work great.  I originally started the thread for opinions on removing the resonator glass pack portion and if that would have any adverse effects.

What is important here is we drive the Probe and we love it, no matter whether it is fully modified or box stock, the best car I have found!

Justin
The 3.0 is a first gen probe.  2.2 4cyl. and 3.0 6cyl. in the 1st gen.
I agree the price is a little scary, but I have a friend with one and he loves it.  Of course he is in a 1st gen. so it wouldn't answer your question.

well, lowrider euro just put on a flowmaster muffler on a base model probe(4cyl.) and they got 3.9 horsepower. that was just a muffler on the stock piping. i'm sure if you free it up a bit, you could get about 5-7 horsepower. i don't have dyno proff, except for the flowmaster try. if a mufler alone will gain 4 horses, why wouldn't a whole cat back system give a few more. chris >

You can go to http://www.probetalk.com and search for the carparts.com coupon.  with the coupon you can get the Borla system for $260.   Yes it is for the GT, but is same diameter piping only 6" short for the 4cyl.  It takes very little for a shop to add the extension.  Costs me $40.  The system is well made and carries a million mile warranty or something like that.  The set-up is far superior in quality to the Pacesetter.  The sound is smooth and mellow, but aggressive when you are on the throttle.  I would like it to be a little more rumble, so I may remove the baffle and see how that works.  It has the same fiberglass resonator tube as stock, just slightly bigger.  In my opinion, with the coupon, it is the best bang for the buck.
