what is a catalyst...not catalitic converter but catalyst...the engine light is on and the code for it said some thing about the catayst below threshold or something like that...i wqas wondering if someone might know?? i have 2000 ford focus

Do you have the code? Was it P0420 (I think that's it)? Catalyst threshold is more than likely a failing catalytic converter but could also be caused by a lean condition because your fuel pump is shot. It really needs to be looked at. It may also have a clogged cat.   See ya, Nick

thank you very much i do believe it is the 420 code i guess ill take it in but i just dont want to have to pay the dang people too much money...lol but i gotta do what i gotta do...are you a mechanic...alot of people are mentioning bad fuel pump or it might be going bad...is there a known problem with a fuel pump on the focus's...when i go on a off ramp my car hesitates very bad..causing me to shut it off and restart...i can put in neutral and itll rev up but in gear it wont do muchof anything..let me know what you think

Yep, I'm a Ford mechanic. Ford recently started a recall on the fuel pump and your car may be one of them. Bring it to the dealer as it may be covered under the recall if it's bad. The check engine light could be something different but I'd have them replace the pump and tell them to clear the code. If it comes back after the pumps been replaced then you know it's something else. Normally you'd get a lean code for a bad pump but it could set the P0420 you have.
