Hi all,
I own a 2000 contour that I bought in NC (flat ground). It ran
great there but now I live in PA where there are lots of hills and
my car seems to have a whole lot of trouble. I heard about all
these chips, mods, and cold air intakes to add horse power and gas
mileage. Now I realise that I only have a 2.0 4 cyl, so obvioulsy I
am not looking for racing performance, but I could definately use
all the horse power I can get. Does anyone have any suggestions?

Thankyou for your reply. I have found a cold air intake at
www.supercoupeperformance.com. It is a new item. YOu have to cut
off about 3" to 4" off the pipe. Looks like it might work. don't
want to make a ram air. Just want to make my car run.

The two intakes most people use on the 2.0 are the RS Akimoto and the Weapon
R. There are some difference in opinion as to which is better (I would opt
for the Weapon R) but either does the job. There is also an Iceman CAI for
the 2.0 Probe, but it is out of production most agree it was the best one
ever made. Keep in mind all of these are made for the Manual Transmission
and if you want to mount them in an ATX, it would take some modification.
For more info visit http://www.probetalk.com and check out the 2.0
Performance section. Hope that helps.

What do you think would be better...A 3inch dryer hose running from the stock
air box, with a K&N high flow air filter, going to the bottom of the car,
which I've seen many people do, or the cold air intake from speedpeople.com?

Does anyone know where to get an intake for the A/T? Or how to modify the one for the manual?

I havent seen a cold air intake on anything but a GT,
but I did a ram air too. how did you do yours and how
well does it work? I used PVC 3in. to 2in. from the
square cut out under the bumper to the air box. Also
if you haven't yet, advance your ignition timing a
little. You will like it.

How Do you advance your ignition timing, and what will that do for the
car? I've never heard of doing that. Anyway, for my ram air I bought a 3"
dryer hose, a rubber connector that has two openings, one of 3" and the other
of 2 1/4 (around that size I guess) so it'll fit onto the air box perfectly.
Since I don't have a base and it doesn't have the GT bumper, I had to run the
hose down to the bottom of the car where there is an opening, I guess its the
splash guard, and placed the hose there. I believe it works really well. My
higher Rpm's work a little better. The only problem is that it affects my
gas mileage. Before it I would have around 430 (max 461) a tank now its only
around 400. I did a 0-60 test before and after it. ( they were on different
days, one a few weeks after I bought the car, which was about a year ago),
the first was pushing 13 sec's which really SUCKS, and the second with the
ram air was around 12.5. A little better but still sucks. It all cost a
little less than $10, so pretty good saying that the Cold Air Intake from
speedpeople.com cost $65. And I don't believe it would work as well because
the filter sits inside the hood and round the engine where all the air is
hot, whereas mine takes it off the road which wont make it as hot, especially
at night.

On the front of your engine there is the distributer.
Take a 12mm wrench, loosen the bolt on the left (only
1 bolt), and twist the dist. counter-clockwise. You
will notice an immidiate diff. when you start it back
up. You only need to go 1/8-1/4in., and don't do it
with the engine running ofcourse. Tighten it down and
your ready to role. Only 5min and free.

P.S. you may be tempted to take it too far. If you
get a popping sound when driving, back it off alittle.
Have fun & drive hard.

It wont do any damage in the long run will it? And when you say "tighten
it down," you mean tighten the bolt while the car is on right? And what is
the 5 minutes and free mean? Sorry for not understanding.

No, it won't do any damage. Unless you go too far,
and for a long amount of time. You will know
instantly if you went too far, because the engine will
not accelerate smothly, and you will hear a popping
sound. This is caused by pre-ignition. Mine is, and
has been for some time now, advanced almost all the
way, and it runs a lot stronger without pre-ignition.
I have had no problems. The factory has it set for
the highest gas milege, do to EPA. The bad part is,
in most cases, better gas milege = poor performance.
This is a way to boost HP safely for free and it only
takes a couple minutes to do it. Last but not least,
don't do any work with the car running, and make sure
eveything is tight befor you start the car. I hope
this will help out better. Have fun with your new
found power.
