Greetings-
My '98 Windstar has been diagnosed with coolant leak (outside the
engine) from the timing chain cover gasket and intake manifold gasket
(s?). It has the 3.8liter engine. I've heard people have had
problems with these gaskets blowing after changing the head gaskets
and wonder if anyone has experienced it the other way around. Also,
the dealer says the engine has to be pulled (dropped?) to do the
timing chain cover gasket but Chiltons does not (raise it 2").
Anyone have any experience they wish to share? It was also
recommended to replace the main seal, timing chain and water
pump "while they are in there". I am at 125,000 on the odometer.
What is the life expectancy of the chain and pump? Total estimate
was $1,700.00 not including the intake gasket job so I am looking for
a cheaper alternative. I have no evidence that the head gaskets are
a problem. Did Ford finally get them corrected from the '95-96
fiasco?
Any input is appreciated.
Thanks.
