Afternoon Sue,
The first thing I would do is make sure that your tag light is not burnt
out. Try to narrow down the scope of the problems, perhaps breaking them
into 2 seperate ones.
The possibilities as I see them : ( Keep in mind I know nothing of the
condition or history of the vehicle)
1) Headlight Switch is going and the connections inside might sometimes work
and sometimes dont. ( most probable if it's the original switch )
2) Tag light is burnt out, and wiring harness connection or ground to dash
is loose / disconnected ( less probable)
3) Tag light is burnt out, and all dash lights are burnt as well ( not
probable)
4) Fuse for that circut is blown ( quite probable, but most lights would be
out, not just tag and dash)
5) Something seriously is awry ( main harness broken / disconnected / cut
for some odd reason - not probable at all)
Couple of questions to try and narrow things down:
Have you checked your fuses? ( under the dash on the firewall I think on a
65)
Have you checked to see if the tail lights turn on when you have your
headlights on as well?
Did all of them work one day, and then just stop for no reason without any
other circuts or systems affected?
Are your headlights / tailights working properly when the others are not?
Is your light switch ( the knob ) loose or gritty - feel like it's working
ok or does it seem a bit 'off'?
Has the headlight switch ever been replaced?
