I have two 302 engines. I want to swap the heads between them. Can I simply unbolt the heads and swap them directly or do I have to do anything else? I was reading my book and it is talking about removing the lifters and pushrods. I was thinking I could remove and install the head as a complete assembly. Are the pushrods matched to the original engine? Please enlighten me so that I may get this started. This is my last resort before I go ahead with the engine swap. TIA, Mike

The heads will swap unless they're from a newer fuel injected engine and even those might swap but I'm not certain. The lifters are matched to the cam by wear over time and should be replaced only if the cam is replaced as well, otherwise leave them in their original positions. You do need the remove the rocker assemblies from the heads otherwise you'll be fighting valve spring compression. The pushrods can be interchanged, hydraulic lifters compensate for any slight difference in length. If you use solid lifters you need adjustable rockers on the heads. Chances are you have hydraulic.
