On teh 77 - 79 T-Birds, the dash does not need to come out in order to
change the hinges.
I've swapped doors and hinges on several of them. First, unbolt the hinges
from the doors, then a socket can reach in to pull the bolts. When you pull
the hinge bolts from the a pillar, loosen all of them in a hinge, remove 2,
but leave the 3rd loose. Twist the hinge aside and loosely fit one of the
bolts into the retainer, then remove the last bolt and hinge. Replacement
is the reverse. This holds the retainer plate in place so you don't need to
remove the dash in order to position the plate. It does work. Haven't had
to pull the dash on one of these cars yet. Also, as far as I know, the
hinges are not repairable. When my brother had to replace them on his 79,
we had to find good ones in a wrecking yard. The good news is that the 2
door and four door hanges are the same. Because of the lighter weight, the
front door hinges off a 4 door are much more likely to be in good condition.
We had no problem finding or replacing them. We did the job outdoors,
during the winter, in about an hour for both. I think the cold may have
spurred us along.
Hope this helps.
Michael.
