So its getting colder out and I have been running my heat everyday. Now the truck is running great but when I stop at a red light and the car sits and idles for a minute with the heat on I hear a loud humming noise from the engine and when the humming stops the engine lurches forward and dies. When it dies the battery light is on and everything in the car is still on but the engine just shut off, When i turn the key it powers right back on. sometime when i feel it happening i give it a little gas and it doesnt die. Now my battery is probly almost 10 years old so I'm not sure if that could be part of it. Anyone have any ideas, I'm getting an oil change and probly a new battery within a couple days so we'll see of that helps but any help would be appreciated.

Try pinching off (close) the vacuum hose that runs from the engine through the firewall to the heater/AC. Use a vice grip pliers or a large binder clip from the office supply. If this helps, you have a split hose or vacuum solenoid diaphragm or broken plastic vacuum tee under the dash. Replace that if that is the problem. Generally after 15 years, all the vacuum hoses and tees and diaphragms should be replaced if you want reliability. For safety, also replace the three brake hoses to the wheels, and the three fuel hoses on top of the fuel tank. Historic rubber is just dirt in stick form.
