My husband was driving on the interestate with the tailgate down and the strap came loose at the tailgate and the tailgate fell off on one side. The dealership has said that they will pay 1/2 of the repair bill. Has anyone else had this problem..

That could have been really nasty. Do you know what caused the failure in the strap?

The only similar experience I've had was in a very old truck where the metal clip rusted through. Thankfully it came off in my hand rather than on the road though.

If it wasn't due to rust or something of that matter and the strap just failed to work properly I by no means would settle for only half the repair bill. How old is the truck?

I can't say i've ever heard of this problem, are you sure strap was secured right? If it was a manufacturing issue i'm sure it would have been discussed by this stage.
