I own a 2005 F150 Lariat crew cab. While driving, sometimes the power to all the dash gauges, radio, air and windows shuts down. As soon as I apply the brake or turn on the headlights, the power comes back on. It does not happen for weeks or months at a time, then it will happen regularly for several days. Driving me crazy. I would like to know if anyone here might know what is causing this, before I spend a bunch of money for someone to trouble-shoot it.

It is apparently linked somehow to the brake application or turning on the headlights, as the power returns every time without fail when I do this. Thank you for any help you can provide.

Check under the dash up and to the left. Make sure vehicle is off. Unplug the harness with many wires going into the back of it, and then plug it back in. If the problem is resolved its a connection issue. If not the turn to the fused box connection and setting

Yeah, unplug and replug the harness plugs, but after you have disconnected one lead on the battery. Make sure you have some contact cleaner spray when you do it, and use it. Make sure you don't smoke or use flame using any contact cleaner containing any chemical ending in the suffix -ane." Home Dxxxx used to sell a contact cleaner that was basically old style gasoline (hexane) in a spray can. If you find any burning or charring, get that part replaced. One reason I drive a '59 instead of a '95 car is that '59's have bolted down connections, only one unreliable pin and socket connection. ALL modern cars and trucks have hundreds of pin and socket connections that get unreliable with age especially in areas with salted roads. Some brands are worse than others for bad connections, Fords are a little better than average. Replacing a bad connection once found usually requires special tools, they are for sale to consumers but it takes a lot of knowledge to buy the right one.
