I need some help. I have a 91 4x4 and it has a strange starting problem. It has always started very easy 2-3 turns and now it's a crap shoot on how it will start. Acts like a crank sensor so I replaced that. Went out this morning and it almost won't catch, turned over until I thought the battery was going to die.Any other thoughts after the crank sensor?

Sounds like it could be a couple things...you said that it turns over, so the starter probably isn't dead. Are you getting any spark? That would be one place to look. Plus, I know that it's been (relatively) cold in Arkansas (you're in Arkansas, right?) so maybe you have a chilly fuel line-- go ahead and put a bottle or two of ISOPROPYL alcohol dry gas in the tanks, let that sit for a few hours, and see how it goes (isopropyl will work its way through your system, just sitting there, and take care of it should that be the problem). There is also the question of your fuel pump and/or filter. Hope that narrowed things down for you....(ed)

ED, Thanks for the reply. Actually this started months ago when it was warm. I have fully tuned it up, checked all spark and gas lines , as well as additives. Then we replaced the crank sensor. It will start sometimes immediately and other times it just keeps turning over until you feel like the battery is going to die, and then it kicks in and starts. I have a few friends that make their living as mechanics, all thought the crank sensor, after replacing that, still no help.<br>keep any suggestions rolling, I appreciate any imput. Thanks, Allen.

Have you tried kicking the tires?

I've kicked more than the tires.

Heh...ah well. I've had other vehicles in the past that have had similar problems (but not my Ranger, fortunately, because it's only a week old to me), and it was always somewhere in the fuel line-- still, it sounds like you're not getting any gas, like the fuel injection jets are sleeping on you. I dunno, after that, I'm stumped. Can anyone else offer some insight?....Ed.

You should never have to hit the gas on a fuel injected eng. I would check the fuel filter & fuel pressure regulator.
