Ok, first things first. I am having a problem with my lifters being noisy. The last time this happened I cured with a oil change and that was early this year. Since then I have a two more oil changes and no problems. But now, the noise is back and I don't need an oil change because I got one about 3 weeks ago. I also noticed since the noise has started, my oil pressure is lower than normal and does not raise at all under heavy acceleration. What is wrong and how can I fix it and what is the cost? Another problem is that my car is stuttering/misfiring. I just put new plugs/wires on a couple weeks ago. The car ran awesome for a week and then it started stuttering and stuff. What else do I need to change and how much...I also noticed some oil in the plug wells, could this be the problem? One more thing, not problem related, but with just the J-Spec cam and a header...you can get up to 170hp? If so, that would be f'ing awesome...thanks Marc 93' PSE Veilside Combat Wing Akimoto intake/Weapon R V2 Filter Borla muffler NGK wires/Bosch plugs Mobil1

Hey Marc, lifters clattering is a result of not enough oil getting to where it needs to be. It could be a cracked head, or another possibility is that your oil pump isn't doing it's job. I recall someone mentioning this before. They came out with an improved pump and it runs about 230 some dollars. As far as the engine sputtering, oil being in your plug wells is not a good thing. There are probably a zillion ways you could get oil there. Don't ask me how. My car was sputtering and misfiring, and I took my car to the dealer. Half the time it wouldn't hold its idle. That was caused by my converter not functioning. I still have some warranties left on my car so they fixed it. If your check engine light is on than there's a very good chance that it isn't working. Every probe i've owned or ridden in seemed to have the sputtering at times, and the check engine light was on in every case. Since your car is a 93, warranty probably isn't an option. Most ford dealers will check some things out free of charge. I just thought I'd give you a few ideas. There are several things that could cause both problems. I'm not a pro, but those things have caused problems like yours in my car, and my dad's car. Good luck! Carolyn >

i have a 97 probe with 16000 miles on it and i have been told by 2 ford dealers that the noisy lifters is a problem with all probes and nothing can be done. I asked them about a new oil pump and they said they never heard of such a thing and it probally would fix it either so if u hear anyhting let me no too rage

There is a new filter. I priced it at my local ford dealer. If they don't think there's a new one then they don't know what they're talking about. Some dealers get several parts from autoparts stores, it's sad but true. I checked at the parts store that gets several parts for my dealer, and there isn't an aftermarket pump even available for 96. The guy at my dealer told me it was the improved pump. It's only available through ford, but it does exist. Carolyn >

What was that dude? Anyways, I know they created a new pump to help with his problem. He should go cock smack his parts guy because he's full of it (hahah). My probe is starting to tick too, but I don't have 230 bucks to get the part, and the installation is probably a pain. If that dude only has 16000 miles on it then most of his warranties should be active. If his dealer is giving him a rough time, then he should try somewhere else. They shouldn't tell him there's nothing they can do. ford will pay for it. Oh well. Carolyn >

<snip> i run pennzoil 20-50w and i never hear the lifters <snip> O-boy...You know, there really is a good reason why the manufacturer recomends a specific grade of oil... Lifter noise: I am running Mobil1 10w30 and have been for 5 or so months now. And had my last oil change like a month ago. They were noisy before, but after my first oil change since purchasing the car it went away and now it is back and loud. Misfiring/studdering Every morning when I turn my car on it is fine and doesn't start stuttering until I drive it a few miles, then the more I drive it the worse it gets. By the end of the day I push the pedal down and it barely accelerates, idles hard, and the muffler sounds like it is spitting. There is traces of oil in my spark plug wells, but it doesn' t look that bad....its been like that since I got the car and it has been misfiring for a couple months until I changed the wires then it ran awesome for a week now it is doing it again. It is really irritating to have such a nice looking car and for it to sound like shit. Thanks Marc
