I have a strange fuel leak in my 78 Mustang II. It is a Mach 1with a 302 and a 4 speed. It seems to come from up by the filler cap and it only occurs when I am adding fuel to it. I have looked at it and the area is sealed off from below so I can't get a good look at anything up there. Can I get into this area without doing some sheet metal cutting to check it out better? Also I have heard that there might be a auxillary tank. If so where is it located and could that be the source of the problem? Thank You Phil -- If you obey all the rules you miss all the fun.

Regular Mustangs have a rubber hose between the filler inlet and the tank inlet, which, after 31 years, should be deteriorated and leaking. I've never seen a Mustang II but I don't know why it should be different. You may have to do an internet search for Mustang II parts. Possible sources are Paddock of Knightstown, IN, and www.macsautoparts.com of New York. By this time, your fuel tank should be leaking, don't be surprised when it does. RFG sucks moisture out of the air and collects it in the bottom of your unplated fuel tank. Tanks since '88, including mustang replacements, have plating to prevent rust. Don't waste money on the plastic lining treatment, it worked only 4 years for me and shed a lot of really fine rust into the carburator.
