i would get 2nd opinion(s). i have heard many tales such as yours. check the tech section @ thunderbird and cougars club of america. there r many factors 2 consider (how long did u drive it like that. did u ever change the fluid etc. ...) i own 94 lx 4.6 140K mi. on it . never had a problem but i do change the fluid every 30k and i have a tranny cooler. good luck!!!!

I have a 95 myself and while it is a good car I find it difficult to find performance upgrades for the 4.6L V8. There's plenty for the Mustang 4.6 but I can't find squat for the T-Bird.

I have a freind with a 96 w/ 4.6. He said that many of the performance parts for the mustang can be fitted for a tbird. It has to do with some special mounting.. but you can use some mustang performance parts on tbird. (there basically the same engine)

First off, for 2 grand they better be putting a new tranny in there.. Second... if only some gears wont engadge i think it might be your linkage or maybe a clutch belt(yes an auto has clutch). If you havent had it done already get a transmission diognostics test done(usually 20 bucks to see whats wrong with it first) before you agree to major repairs. Mine is only a 90, but the tranny in it has a problem were it will start slipping because some part gets loose under there. Whenever it does it, my uncle comes over and tightens it up(im not an expert). What im tryin to say is it could be somthing simple, or you could need a complete re-build. Just have it checked before you pay out the ass when it could be simple... good luck

Got a 95... had a 91 5.0. It's a little different, but you can build them up. I'd be pushing around 270hp at sea level right now.

Darc-your major limitation will be the intake-Ford has had a lot of problems with the supplier of that piece-and they are known to crack at inopportune times-your best bet for building the 4.6 is to find a wrecked Cobra and use the intake from it-look for a 96-00 unit. The last year for the current iteration of the Stang will offer a Supercharged version-look for that to come out next June.

Only the 96-97 t-bird had the plastic intake manifold that was prone to cracking. Also, the intake for a DOHC 4.6 won't fit the SOHC 4.6, and even if it did, it wouldn't clear the hood.

Ken
