I have a 93' 2.3L and its at 197,000 and still kicken (its my daily driver) so I think you would be safe by putting the money into it!!! --Kyle

I have a 96 2.3L and at 130k it still runs great. But I think its not so simple to compare the 2.3L and 4.0L models, not sure if there is anything else different besides the engine but the more HP and more torque will put more stress on mounts and other suspension components. It really boils down to how it was driven. . .if someone is getting sideways and red lining it in first gear on every corner for 100k... expect stuff to start breaking. But personally... for the money, it doesn't sound like you are putting much maybe 3-4 grand tops right? It will easily last you a few more years so I say do it! bfootblue1

I have a 91 Ranger with a 2.3, 5 speed manual that has 253000 miles on it. The only major repair it has ever had is an oil pump at about 150000. Currently the transmission whines a bit, but I should have taken better care of it. The truck still has the original clutch.
