Monterrey is a big city with quite a lot of money floating about so there's lots of SUVs and vans around. I picked up a copy of the local Classifieds and turned to the (two cols. long) Windstars for sale. I was amazed. At 2000-2001 the median price is around 10,000 - 12,000 (converted to US$) But two years older and the Windstars all hover around the $3500 price. $3000 a year depreciation between 2000 and 1998! So, pray tell me, what is going on? Clive (Monterrey)

I'm willing to bet it has to do with the fact that most 1995-1997 Windstars had serious issues with 3.8 engine head gaskets, overdrive transmissions, steering racks, and that has also lowered the perceived value of the 1998 models which are similar in appearance. I don't see any reason for 1999 models to be that cheap. 2000 model Windstars in Texas sell anywhere from $6000-$8000 for private parties to $12,000 for a nice one at a Ford dealer. 2001's and 2002's are somewhat higher. Best deal I've seen around here was a clean black and silver 2003 SE Sport with 45K for $12,495. But most 2003 models are still selling closer to $15,000. Used 2004 Freestars are still fetching $16,000-$18,000 or even more for upgraded models. I think people are still afraid of 3.8 head gaskets and the transmission issues. It's more expensive to change and motor or transmission in a minivan because of accessibility. So a 1998 Windstar is only worth $2500-$3500 in the eyes of a consumer or dealer because that person sees a potential $2000 repair ahead. Or worse, TWO $2000 repairs. Or there is just a glut of these things on the market as the people who buy new vans every three to five years are dumping them for new Freestars. Rad
