Zetec Engine Battery Cable Routing (Hermosillo and Wayne Assembly
Plants)
AFFECTED VEHICLES
Certain 2000 model year Focus vehicles from Job #1 2000 through
January 11, 2000.
02S42 - Pinch Bolt Torque (Only Wayne Assembly Plant) and Zetec
Engine Battery Cable Routing (Hermosillo and Wayne Assembly Plants)
AFFECTED VEHICLES
Certain 2000 and 2001 model year Focus vehicles from January 12, 2000
through May 31, 2001.
SAFETY CONCERNS
In some of the affected vehicles equipped with the Zetec engine, the
battery cables may be misrouted, improperly secured, or inadequately
insulated. If any of these conditions were to exist, overheating or
corrosion could occur in the cable. These conditions may cause
illumination of the check engine light or battery light, hard start
or no start, or dead battery. In extreme cases a short circuit may
occur, causing the cable to overheat, and possibly lead to fire.
In addition, on all of the affected vehicles, the pinch bolt that
retains the steering knuckle to the lower ball joint may not have the
proper torque. If this condition exists, the customer may experience
vibration, noise, or joint separation.
SERVICE ACTION
WHEN THE PARTS AND TECHNICAL INSTRUCTIONS BECOME AVAILABLE:
Dealers will inspect the routing of the battery positive cable,
verify proper terminal torque, inspect, and if necessary, modify the
insulation on the affected vehicles to eliminate the potential for
any of the conditions stated above (Zetec engines only).
In addition, dealers will torque the pinch bolts on all the affected
vehicles.
PLEASE NOTE: PARTS AND TECHNICAL INSTRUCTIONS ARE NOT AVAILABLE AT
THIS TIME TO REPAIR THE CONDITION STATED ABOVE.
You will be notified in a follow-up standard communication as soon as
possible.
CUSTOMER NOTIFICATION
Owners of record will be notified after the standard dealer bulletins
have been issued.
