Just curious - my 96 has a governor that limits engine rpm to an indicated 4600 on tach. Why? I have never had an engine with such a low limit. All my prior engines ran to mid 5's or higher. George

What about them? I've had both pushrod and OHC engines that ran to over 6,000 (but neither in a ford explorer!) I'm curious..... what's so special about the pushrods on a 96 EX that limits the engine to 4600?

The 4.0 OHV engines are very old technology.  Revving these engines past the limiter won't produce any more power.  These 4.0's are more for low end torque than riding the redline.  I think the redline in my 93 Explorer is 4800 according to the tach.  I had a 94 Taurus SHO with a factory rev limiter set at 7300.  These engines are night and day in technology even though the SHO engine was first released in 1989.

I think it is more than that, Joe - my mom"s 4 banger Ford Tempo has pushrods and goes over 5,000. We have owned several Crown Vic/ Grand Marquis cars since 1985 - pushrod V8's with Hydraulic lifters, and they all go to mid 5's or higher. George

Oh it is. It is just a rev limiter that Ford puts on these vehicles because.... hey... it's a family truck. it doesn't need to rev that high! I've owned sever and my ranger will go around 6,000 before the rev limiter kickes
