are you talking about the rod that inserts above your license plate and you turn to drop the tire down, if so, buy a long or multiple 3/8" drive socket extensions r Does anyone know where I can purchase the attachment for my tire tool on a 96 ford explorer, that will allow me to drop the spare down? Tire tool??? What are you talking about?  To drop the spare you lower the two rear seats. Then you lift the spring loaded floor cover at the back of the seats. Clipped to the underside are two rods. They fit together, and go in the hole in the back above the license plate and operate the tire winch.  George  96 EB , 13 May 2003 20:51:54 -0000 "Joseph Gallagher " <

Are you sure you are talking about a '96 explorer? The tire tool and jack are in a compartment on the left, in the rear storage compartment, looking from the rear, you slide two clips and the panel can be removed.

Attachment? You should just stick the straight end of the tire iron into the slot at the base of the cargo area. Kinda like a big screwdriver - and turn. My 92 and 99 are the same. Gotta believe the 96 is too. >

Yup - just rotated tires & checked air in spare on my 96 last week. .He needs the two rods that attach to the jack so you can operate it without going under the truck, or fit in the hole above license plate to reach the tire winch. The rods are longer than the rear compartment - would never fit in it.   On Tue, 13 May 2003 19:05:57 -0400 "Jimmy Hughes" <

-do some model years of Explorers access the spare tire in a different manner?

-is it possible to access the '96's spare by an alternate process that doesn't require the long (behind the back seat) jack extenders and the (left rear compartment) jack handle using the access port locating above the rear license plate? Something like a means of crawling under the car and cranking something? If so, '96 owners, you can use the official method and stay a lot cleaner.

Hi, Craig - 96 is the only Explorer I've owned. I know the spare tire location is the same for other years. I was under mine, and investigated tire system shortly after purchase. The temporary tire pretty much covers up winch system, and if the tire is up tignt,  I did not see a way of removing tire without causing damage. Besides, the tire is heavy enough that I would not want to be near it if it dropped. George
