I'm planning on replacing my 3 on the tree with an automatic, and just looking for input. I've got a 289. Is it even a good idea? Should I buy new or track down on old one? Any ideas on a ballpark figure that I can look forward to paying?
I have no idea on any of this, so any info would really help.

You will need to find a C4 out of a Bronco('73-'77). I would also run an aftermarket shifter than bother with stock linkage. Also what year is the 289? If it is '65 an older the bellhousing bolt pattern uses 5 bolts, where 66an newer use a 6 bolt bellhousing bolt pattern. I would have to say that it isn't a bad idea, it's just your preference. I personly like rowing some gears. On price I don't know what to tell you, I don't really know what it would go for, used 150-250,new 600-1500, these are just gueses. Have you tried looking on E-bay. Hope this helps.

I agree with falcon, on the fact that you need one out of a Bronco. Make sure you have the correct oil pan on it when you get it. When I bought mine it had an after market oil pan on it and it caused it to flow out the overflow.

I also utilized an aftermarket shifter when I first did the swap, but opted for the factory automatic column after having the cable break on the after market set up several times.

The only other thing you will need to do, is re-wire your back-up lights. (if you want them) Try to get an automatic with a neutral saftey switch.

goto www.broncograveyard.com they have advice on all different style trannies, plus some adapters and info you may need. advance adapters has some parts you may need too.

the easiest would probably be the c4 because the broncos came with them, finding one with the correct output shaft (ie one from a bronco) is next to impossible, if you do find one congradulations!

good luck and let us know what you come up with!

Hey sinner6000 I have found some onfo if you are still thinking about swaping in an auto tranny. While looking through a back issue of 4wheel&off road I found a little article On early Broncos. In that they said that Advance Adapters offers parts to change a 2wd C-4 to be able to put into an early Bronc. Hope this helps.

Hey falcon, thanks for the info. I haven't had the chance to do the swap yet, but I'll update the club to let everyone know how it went!
Thanks again for the referral.

A huge thanks to the EB Club! I got tons of info from everyone, and I hope to be able to do the work in the next few weeks. I wouldn't have found any of this stuff out there, so I'm glad I got hooked up with the right folks.
