When would you buy a new tire? I would only buy a new tire if the one that I'm using is already done. I don't think that I should buy a new when I can have them recapped.

I seem to be buying new tires all the time at the moment! Must be my driving style in this vehicle or something. I suspect it's because it's a truck i'm less careful with bumping over things & am not getting the wheels rebalanced as I should.

I get my tyres checked by my mechanic. I rely on him to tell me if the tyre can be repaired safely or if I need a new one. I seem to need new tyres far too often, I think it is because the roads are not looked after as well as they used to be.

I to buy new tires when they cannot be fixed. I usually have my husband check out the problem and he makes the decision on what we should do.

I actually need new tyres just now, which is something I'm not looking forward to paying for. I'm ordering remoulds though, as I don't beleive they're a problem unless you do real speed driving.

Buy new tires before they go bald or lose all their tread - that can be really dangerous and lead to bigger problems with your car. I am speaking from personal experience.

What are you looking for? Style, just better tires, or both? BFGoodrich has some tires of different colors that you can pick out online...

Having purchased a set of Michelin LTX M/S's, I can attest that they are pricey. Bout $170 each US. But I now have over 66,000 MILES, yes miles and not Kilometers, on them and I doubt that half of the tread has worn. Most people that have looked at them recently find it hard to believe they have that much mileage. Very Happy Michelin Owner Dennis

Three cheers for Nokians! I didn't feel it was necessary to deal with another Ottawa winter on my stock Firestone HTs, so I bought a set of Nokian WRs. They are the replacement for the NRWs. This family of tires are the only ones that are true 4-season tires that bear the severe service emblem for winter conditions. While not cheap, at C$165 each +tax they are comparable in cost to the other tires mentioned in this thread, but should perform even better. So far they've been great. They have a fairly aggressive directional tread pattern that grips hard-packed snow very well and cuts nicely through slush. After enduring a couple of frightening slush-planing episodes last winter on the HTs, these new tires are a joy. And being an all season tire, I could leave them on all year if I wanted to, although I think I'll put the Firestones back on for the dry months until they die, which isn't going to far off, judging by the rapid rate of wear on them. Cheers to all, jhg

I haven't heard of Nokian WRs before, I will have to check them out. Thanks for the post. Great to hear from you again. How's your Escape doing? Gary

Hi Gary, The Escape is doing well, thank you. I just passed 33,000km yesterday, and for the most part, everything is ok. Just before Christmas, the dashboard heating vent selector knob broke off in my hand, but Ford replaced it without charge, so that's always good. Last Fall, I also insulated all 5 doors with 1" foam sheeting, hand-crafted to fit around all the obstacles in there. This made a big difference in cutting down road noise. Now all I can hear is the wind noise from the mirrors! The other modification I made was to install an 'Add-a-Circuit' module in my fuse panel allowing me to wire the fog lamps into the illumination circuit which has the effect of being able to keep the fog lights on when the high-beams are activated. I found the instructions to do this on one of the other Escape sites (can't remember which one, but I still have them if anybody wants them). My one current complaint is with the 16" steel rims I bought from Crappy Tire to mount the Nokian WRs on. That might have been a mistake. At least one of the wheels is producing an intermittent vibration while driving. It can vary from mild to a very noticeable bumping sensation at all speeds up to 40km/h and then again at about 80km/h. But sometimes its not there at all. All the wheels have been removed and rebalanced twice to no avail. One thing I've noticed, however, is that the wheel sometimes doesn't appear to be centered on my hub. The gap between the protruding center of the hub and main whole in the center of the rim that it sticks through isn't even. In fact it can be twice as wide on one than the other (we're talking something like 1mm vs 3mm). I'm wondering if the the rim is somehow "floating" around a bit on the hub? Of course the other possibility is that I have a slipping belt in a tire, but I have no idea how to prove what is happening. Does anybody have any ideas? Regarding the WRs, there isn't a ton of information available about them yet. There is some here: http://www.nokian.com/index_en.html as well as here: http://www.nokiantires.com/indexen.html I hope you're enjoying your winter! Take care, jhg

So the Nokian WRs are replacements for the NRW's? Any difference besides the name? Thanks Evan

Hi Evan, Well, apart from a revised tread pattern (the WRs don't resemble the Hakkapeliitta 1s, like the NRWs do), and the inclusion of a built-in tread-wear indicator (that shows remaining usable tread depth in millimeters) the rest of the specifications look pretty similar between the two. The US Nokian site (http://www.nokiantires.com/indexen.html) still has information on both models, but doesn't seem to be updated with respect to all the available sizes of the WRs, including the available SUV sizes. The European site, however, (http://www.nokian.com/index_en.html) list all the sizes for the WRs, and doesn't list the NRWs at all. So my guess is that the US site is simply out-of-date and the NRWs have now been replaced by the WRs. It may take a while, however, to clear out the remaining stock. Maybe there will be some deals to be had? Cheers, jhg
