Hello, I purchased my first mustang the other day. I've always had camaros and don't know alot about the mustangs. I bought a 1996 gt and was wondering what were the first things i should do to increase power. Also, I found a good deal on a set of heads from a '97 cobra and was wondering since they are 4v dohc iof they would bolt directly onto my gt and if so, what kinds of power gains i could expect. Thanks.

i have to admit i dont know a lot about the modular engines, i'm a fox body fan, but no i dont think the dohc heads will fit. start off with some headers, cat-back, mass air/injectors, etc.

Congratulations!
I guess the first question is how much detail do you want to get into?!!
The first thing would probably be to remove the motor and assess the damage. While it's out, you may want to repaint the engine bay.
Anybody out there agree with this?

Hi, Under the hood would be a great place to start.Especially since you are going to have to pull the motor anyway. But I would highly recommend you go through the chassis and brakes at the same time. What good is "go" if you can't "whoa" when you need to?!
Hope this helps! Congrats and good luck. BTW I just picked up a '66 C-Code 289 coupe.
Gene

Check your frame for any rot in these areas: rear frame rails where the leaf springs bolt in, and the front frame rails where the bumper braces are. You might consider rebuilding your suspension with some energy suspension poly-urethane bushings. It makes a big difference in how the car handles! One other thing is to replace that crappy single resevoir master cylinder with a dual resevoir and get new wheel cylinders (they only cost @ $9ea. and it's cheap insurance!). I can't remember what I used, I think it was for a pinto, but if I do I'll post it at a later date.
Good Luck!
D.J.

Check out www.cal-mustang.com they have a book called "how to restore your mustang". They also stock all the parts for a concorse restoration.

start with the motor, while it's out do everything under the hood. spend some extra time here you don't want to do it wrong and have to go through pulling the motor again. i also feel getting some good restoration guides is important. i've restored 4 mustangs, a 66 coupe, 67 conv., 68 fastback and my present 67 coupe, i've made a few mistakes, and mistakes cost time and money to correct, so take your time and do it right the first time. good luck and i'm sure that you'll have a ride you'll be proud of.
