It doesn't requires you to use 5w-20 motorcaft oil
but it does recommend that you use it. I on the other hand use 5w-30 Moble One. But it all comes down to user preference.

For 2001 Ford and Honda have both made the switch to the new 5w-20 motor oil for many of their vehicles.

If your owner's manual requests that you use 5w-20, then your warranty may be at loss if you choose to use a non-recommended oil weight.

Found a story about it...

http://www.startribune.com/stories/435/405074.html

I am not trying to get into a pissing contest with you. But they cannot void your warranty over you changing it to a different weight.

If changing your oil to different weight would void your warranty, then wouldn't changing it to a different brand also void your warranty. The only cars I had ever heard of voiding the warranty over changing the oil to a different weight or brand is the vette and viper they have a sticker under the hood the says requires (such and such) oil. But like I said before its user preferences.

Especially since I can guarantee most dealers would fill it with 10w-30 unless you specifically asked for something different.

Hi Everyone!,
I love it when someone comes up qith a post that gets us all thinking and talking. Makes for interesting reading after a long day's work. I'm a Auto Tech at a large shop and have been one for a long time. If you look at your owners manual, you'll see that oil viscosity is determined largely by ambient temperature. Basically, the colder it is the light weight oil you use, same goes for higher temps, the higher the viscosity you'll use. If you drive your car hard, like auto cross or Solo than a higher viscosity is the hot setup. If you're doing normal driving than 5w20, 5w30 or 10w30 works fine. I use 10w30 Mobil 1. Its a great oil for all temps and engine conditions. Basically I drive hard sometimes and normal at others. By staying within the engine guidelines for oil usage and change intervals you won't void your warranty

Well on the oil cap it says 5W-20 Only - so its even more noticable than a sticker under the hood. Many new Fords and Hondas require 5W-20 oil at least according to the information on the bottle of oil I bought. There must be a serious reason to use specifically that weight.

The main reason for such a light weight oil is so the engine can conform to the EPA's rules regarding "start up emissons", "CAFE standards" and fleet average mileage. My oil cap says 5w20 but my owners manual says 5w30...

I wonder if the Ford mechanics use a special wrench to get them off?

I have to confess that I haven't changed my vehicle's oil myself in twenty years, although I changed alot of them when I was a machine operator and railway mechanic back then.

Gary

I think I missed to original post. My first stop is usually the AutoZone on Burnet Rd. If their out of Mobil 1 I head over to Parts America on Anderson Ln. near Burnet Road. Between the two I usually find what I'm looking for. What type of car are we talking about that takes 6 quarts, a 4.6? My 5.0 takes 5+1. Bob

Matt, Yes I hate that. Last weekend it happened to me and I gasp, just used a "Deutscghjgjqhgaugq" whatever instead of the Motorcraft. Next time I'm buying 2 if they have them. Is the clutch done yet?? Phil.

Ya, the 4.6L takes 6 quarts. (5 + 1 for the filter). I grab the extra (7th) quart to use inbetween changes if the oil gets low.

Wouldn't that be the first quart? I mean if you pour the 7th quart with the drain plug removed doesn't the other 6 quarts also drain? ;-)

No. I buy 7, pour one through and then put in the plug, THEN the other 6 go in.

I thought I was anal. You've got to be craping me. You pour seven quarts of Mobil 1 through your motor just to clean out anything that may be lingering in the bottom of the oil pan? What do you do w/ the 7 quarts you use to flush the motor? If you throw it away, don't, because Gerry will take it in a heart beat! I thought I was bad changing my synthetic every 3k. Bob

Right, so you don't really pour the 7th thru, you pour the first. Nevermind, just bored over here, waiting for the big hand to be on 6 and the little one on 5 :-)
