Lately, when I come to a stop or traveling at low RPM's, I noticed that my oil pressure gauge is dropping almost to the point of bottoming out. When I start the vehicle up it reads normal until it warms up. Is this something I should be real concerned about or it can be fixed easily.

I had the oil changed by a shop instead of doing it myself so I suspect low grade oil or a shoddy job on it. Thanks in advance, Thomas.

I run 10w-30 Valvoline in all my trucks. And religiously use the Lucas heavy duty oil stabilizer, which makes the oil run cooler, prevent dry starts, and boosts your pressure a bit. I also recommend running it in rearends, frontends and standard trannys. try it, I'm sure it will cure your problem.
Scott

Thomas, this is a very important issue. You must check your oil level A.S.A.P. because your oil is very low. The next thing you should start hearing in your engine, is a pig sound. Your lifters are getting stuck that is an indication of low oil level in your truck. My experience is that some oil places uses recirculated oils. Some times they do'nt put enough oil in the engine and that can account for the oil pressure drop. Either way check your oil level and make sure you do not have a leak in the filter area or any other area under the truck.
Pierre

I had a similar occurance a few years ago, in a car an Olds Delta 88 with an 8 cylinder. Turned out to be worn bearings. The oil pressure would be fine right after start up and when the engine was at relatively higher rpm's but would drop off at low idle and stops. Turns out the bearings were worn and the clearance was excessive on the crank and connecting rods. When I removed them, all of the babbitt had worn away and the copper flashing was all that was left before I would have been running on the steel bearing saddle. If you are sure this isn't the problem you may also want to make sure the filter isn't clogged in addition to the other suggestions. And make sure there isn't any air in the guage line.

Tom, I'm going to agree with Pierre, with an additional suggestion. You say this time you haven't done the oil change yourself. If your low oil pressure problem started after you got out of the lube shop, take it back, and make em fix it. Tell them you want to watch them put in the oil YOU recommend, and with another new oil filter

And while they're at it, tell them to clean the engine bay...lol
David

I think lennythexdca is right on this. I'm sure you already checked your oil level, that would be the first thing. The only other thing I can think of, is your oil pump might be worn out.

Hey I told you to try to add the oil stabilizer because it tends to make the oil run cooler, depending on your location and the summer time heat, thinner oil will result in lower pressure at lower idle. Especially while in gear with the brake on. I had the same problem with my 83--460 cid, and it ended up being a wiped bearing. I had to rebuild the engine and had the same problem after this summers heat rolled around. I have plans for a cooler when time permits. I will tell you though that it is not the pump. An oil pump is a gear pump and either it pumps oil or it doesn't, there is no in between..ya dig?
Scott

Doesn't exactly listen, does he? You offered the oil stabilizer idea, and I suggested he take the truck back to the grease monkeys, and tell them to fix it
