From my experience with Fords I have noticed that the guage always runs a little lower in the normal zone, here lately though, the guage is reading near the red zone. I was told this was because of the synthetic oil I use. So, if anyone here uses synthetic oil, opinions will be greatly appreciated.

The idiot gauge only applies to late 95 or later. 93 through parts of 95 had a real analog sending unit which would display some sort of idea of real pressure. I have a 93, and it does tend to run on the low side. It also fluctuates, which I don't care for, but it never does hit the red. When using 5W30 synthetic, it never got too low though. I believe part of my problem is, however, that I have a possible pressure problem in itself, as I do get HLA ticking after idling for a few minutes which goes away after 5 min or so of 3k+ rpm driving. Just don't have the $$ to get it fixed. Hope it's not hurting too much, condition has existed ever since I owned the car at 56k miles, and now I'm gettin close to 109k. Based on the 1996 Probe Technical Service Manual, the oil pressure guage is a simple switch. When the engine is started and running a pressure switch senses the oil passage pressure and "opens", thus turning the oil gauge "on" (where the needle should go around normal). When the engine is turn off, the pressure switch is "closes" and the oil gauge turns "off". So you were correct, Nestor. The oil pressure gauge is simply an on-off switch. There is either pressure or no pressure. Now what that cutoff pressure is, is unknown. So if your gauge is "dead", meaning it does not move when the vehicle is started or turned off. I would check the oil pressure switch or the gauge, most likely one of them is faulty, unless you have reason to believe you are having oil pressure problems then have your car checked out. Enjoy, Bryan Pendleton >

Hmm. Ford just just all the corners on that one. :) Bryan, arent you still working on that NOS install? Have you thought of adding an oil pressure guage? It would make an interesting write up since I dont know if any 2.0L have installed an aftermarket guage. Where is the oil pressure sensor on that engine anyway? (hoping it isnt anywhere near the oil filter) Dedric Ramsey dedric@...
