I don't know whether the switch is MECHANICALLY defective (how would I test
it), or not, or if it is the other problem.
It is in over drive, the switch, when pushed, would take it out of over
drive and a light on the dash board would so indicate.
Is there a connector at the trany that this switch goes to, or does it go
through the computer?

Hi Jim,
Have some familiarity with this and wanted to react, but I can't determine
from your message if it is the switch that is MECHANICALLY defective (per
your observation), or if it's mechanically functioning properly but just
cannot ELECTRICALLY signal the Transmission Control Module to engage OD.
Have you tested for fault codes, or the switch perhaps? I believe the OD
switch simply sends a "short" or "open" signal to the TCM which in turn
energizes a solenoid in the valve body to place the transmission in OD.
Replacing the OD switch should be fairly easy but anything more than that
should prove to be an interesting DIY weekend.
