Alright folks, here are the details with regard to the Protech Cam Gears:
A 50% deposit will be required for each pair, so you will need to deposit
$150 for a pair. I will be organizing the purchase of the gears through
Protech, so I will need a Money order or Cashiers check in the amount of
$150 to get things moving. Once the gears have been completed I will
request the remaining $150 plus any shipping cost required to mail them to
your home. Upon reciept of the remaining cost, I will mail the gears out.
The design of the gears will allow for adjustments of + or - 10 degrees and
will be adjusted with 4 bolts. Both the gear ring and the gear hub will be
machined from aluminum. The hub will be brushed and polished and the gear
ring will be anadized in your choice of RED or BLUE.
Turn around time has been changed to 1 month to be safe. The start time will
begin once Protech has recieved all the deposits from me.
Now for a little info on adjustable cam gears: First recall that the timing
belt sychronizes the timing of the crankshaft, the intake camshaft and the
exhaust camshaft. By installing adjustable cam gears on the two camshafts,
this will allow you to manually retard or advance the timing of each cam. By
adjusting the gears you can actually move the power band around some shorten
it or widen it, but typically most people advance the intake cam and then
retard the exhaust cam. This effectively makes the power stroke longer,
because we are opening the intake valves earlier then opening the exhaust
valves later. This type of cam gear adjustment also broadens the power band
increasing both the low end and well as the high end. Its almost a win-win
situation. For those who have install the J-spec cam you will see even
better gains from these gears. While I hate to throw HP numbers out, I have
heard of near bone stock 4 cyl motors gaining between 5-10 horses simply
from installing and tuning some cam gears.
I claim this is probably going to be the only opportunity because Steve and
I have contacted just about every well known maker of cam gears, and they
are generally not willing to make them or require the quantities to be at
least 10 pairs at the cheapest of $400 for the pair, or for a couple pairs
they will quote nearly $1000. $300 is very cheap for what we are getting.
The inexpensive cam gears out there generally use the steel gear off the
factory gears, our gears will be fully Aluminum. If you are seriously
interested, I suggest you get on board because I feel this may be your only
opportunity for cam gears.
