More than likely that plug is for the high voltage input to run the cluster lights from the headlamp switch. Making that cluster work isn't going to be easy.   See ya, Nick

Hi James,

You need the Ford E.V.T.M., see publication FCS-12950-4 Pages 60-1 to 60-5. I suspect the connector is for the Auxillary Instrument Cluster, (the two oil gauges, Pressure and Temp) mounted where your car has the bin, to the right of the cluster.
The EVTM can be purchased from Helm at: www.helminc.com or call 1(800)782-4356.
Maybe you can convince your local Ford Dealer to photocopy you the 5 pages from their EVTM, good luck, the SVT cluster is real neat, hope you can get it to work.

It's probably the high voltage input from the headlamp switch. The lights in the SVT cluster run on high voltage. I'm sure you could get it to work but I don't know what kind of hassle it will be. I'm pretty sure you need to change the headlight switch and make a wire harness. See ya, Nick

I disagree that the grey "mystery" plug is for the cluster illumination, from reviewing the shop manual, the plug supplies the auxiliary oil pressure and temp cluster with a signal. the non svt cars don't have the aux. inst. cluster.  The electro-luminescence illumination appears to be self contained.  The manual warns not to probe the cluster with test lights, etc.  It uses a digital signal in some clusters,  also it warns to keep the gauge cluster upright to prevent the silicone damping fluid from leaking out damaging the gauge.  Refer to publication FCS-12949-04 pages 413-00-i to413-01-61.

I didn't check the manual. I was assuming. I had talked to the hotline one day a while back and asked him about swapping clusters for someone on this list. He had told me that the SVT cluster runs on high voltage from the switch. I just looked up the headlamp switch in the parts computer and they're the same so I stand corrected. I never even cracked a maunual. Sometimes hot line isn't always so hot. See ya, Nick

I must admit, I'm not 100% sure either, the manual was not written to assist with swapping parts for one car to the next. It seems that many Ford harnesses share the same hard shell connector terminal locations. I recall trying to verify that a car in the shop here really needed a computer years ago, we had a 6 cylinder PCM but the car was a V-8. We took a chance and plugged in the V-6 PMC, the car started and ran on only 6 cylinders. I hope he has luck with the swap. I could not find too many specifics on the Electro-Luminescence Cluster workings.

Yeah, I'm sure the PCM only had 6 injector drivers in it. I looked in the 03 EVTM and it doesn't list a specific SVT cluster. It only has with/without accessory gauge cluster. You know how good the manuals are! :) And I couldn't find an 02 manual. Someone's probably eating their lunch on it. Lol! See ya, Nick
