Older Fords used a 2-piece rope seal, just dropping the pan and slightly dropping the crank will allow access to rear seal.Removing rear bearing cap (1/2 the seal is in that) and getting one of those "Chinese finger" kits to fish the other half out.Replacing with a 2-piece rubber seal makes installation easier.<br>Later Fords are 1-piece,the tranny MUST come out.

Just replaced mine by dropping oil pan and loosening crank. Make sure on the two peice that you remove the pin on the block side of seal before you put the new one in.

Thanks Mike, I should have waited a couple more days for an answer. I was told that you had to remove the oil pan which I already have done!! All is not lost though since the timing cover also has a small leak so I am getting it all done at once.
