Well there doesn't seem to be so much activity in this club... everyone out on the trail? Well, I was not for three days as the dealer replaced my transmission, flywheel and starter in my 97 XLT with 48,000 miles. It didn't really bother me that this needed to be replaced because it was not working properly. I had taken it to the dealer where I purchased the previously owned truck from on 12/31/99, four times in the past 5 months regarding the hard shift into 2nd gear. Each time the "transmission expert" drove the truck he said it was all fine. Even when we went out on the road and you could really feel and hear the transmission slam into gear ( now this is actually hearing it go "bang" from the outside with the windows down )he insisted that this was normal. Explaining that it was the transfer of the "power built up in the transmission that needed to go somewhere". Four times!!!! So, I had off last Monday and decided to try another dealer after explaining my problem on the phone to this other dealer. I stopped in, the transmission guy hooked up his computer to my truck and mentioned that there were not codes and how the other guy didn't do something to it regarding the computer. Then, we drove the truck (he drove, I went along) down one side of the bldg and he noticed right away that there was a problem. We went on the road, gave it some gas, felt it hesitate in 2nd gear, he noticed the problem even more. When we pulled away from a stop light he gave it some gas, let the gas go at about 15mph, truck slams into gear. Now, can anyone tell me why the dealer I bought the truck from would not touch this?? I only had to pay 100.00 for all the work, and am very pleased with the outcome-never drove better and am comfortable with knowing that it is fixed. Also, I took my truck in for some chirpping under the hood (now this is the dealer where I bought the truck from) and they called me that afternoon and told me that the problem was the belt and they replaced it. The next morning I start my truck up, chirp..chirp..chirp.. and then it got so loud I could hear it in the cab with the windows up. I went back and they told me that it was the clutch fan after having four guys stare in my engine bay. They were very nice about it....uh-huh, sure. He didn't charge me for the labor to have it replaced since they apparently replaced the wrong part, even though they said the belt was cracked, and it still cost me $100.00. Well, after careful consideration.... the next Expedition I buy will be from the second dealership and we shall see if they treat "their" customers as well as they treat customers of "other" dealerships. The only reason why it doesn't bother me about my trans going face up is that anything that is mechanical can break, regardless of what it is and my next vehicle will be an Expedition. Okay.. well, I'll get off the soapbox and give someone else a turn. If anyone lives in Maryland and wants to know the names of the dealers, email me and I will gladly pass the info to you. Have a good day all and be safe out there on the roads.

Christopher.

I have a 98 Expedition Eddie Bauer and at 35,000 miles i thought i was having transmission trouble. If I have the gear selector in 2 then when i pull up to a stop light and go to leave the tranny stays in 2nd gear, it never shifts down to 1 even if you step on it. They said this is normal and i never took the time to get it looked at more in depth. Now today i'm at 61,000 and the tranny started acting strange. It goes forward fine but even when i put it into neutral it still is grabbing forward a little, not completely locked in though. When i put it into reverse its like the brakes are on and the engine pulls down while trying to move it backwards on level pavement.

Has anyone seen this problem? If so please respond ASAP as I might have a battle to fight.

Christopher, how did you only pay $100 for your tranny? Extended warranty??

Thanks,
jon

They told you that staying in 2nd at a stop light is normal??? Who were these morons? Driving in "2" mean it won't shift passed 2nd, nothing more.

Jon,

I can't comment on the problem you are having now with your transmission, but placing the gear selector in 2 locks the transmission into 2nd gear ONLY. This is used when starting out in very low traction conditions (such as ice and snow) where the use of 1st gear would result in tire spin at any throttle position. This is normal operation.

Stephen
2001 XLT
