I have a roaring noise in my engine, 2002 Contour SE. It almost sounds like the power steering pump is going bad, but the fluid level is fine and the noise occurs when the car is sitting still. I've also noticed that the tach surges occasionally when the car is idleling. (I'm convinced I own "Christine", just in a newer body style.) LOL Thanks for any help. Lorrie

I had that noise on my 2.5 v6. It is the Idle control valve leaking and that vents into the aircleaner. It is mounted by 2 small bolts on the left rear of the engine just in front of the driver against the firewall. I removed it then used carb cleaner to clean the carbon off. Worked right away. Cost spray can of carb cleaner. As for the surges that is a leaking intake manifold. The engine gets unmetered air past the MAss air flow meter (air cleaner) Just replace the upper manifold gasket set. Not hard but rotate bolts for tightening sequence and watch torge (aluminum). Rick
