re: 04 Ranger XL Does anyone know if the dealer can disarm the Securilock system? This stroke of 'passive anti-theft' brilliance requires a key with a chip to activate the ignition. I'd rather forgo the paranoid silliness and avoid the extra expense every time one of the drivers loses a key.

You can program key's your self, Check the owners manual. Your insurance company should be giving you a discount for this. Jason

Jon - This sounds like an interesting project though, as a business owner my self I would have to weigh the odds and financial aspect of the issue; For instance, check with your Insurance company about the discount(s) usually about 10%, It may out weight the cost of disabling the system. I imagine the key code is located some where in the computer (brain). You might try asking the Ford Dealer what to do since you just made your eight key? They may inadvertently point you in the direction you need to go. Another little known way to save you & your business money is getting the windows etched with your vin# (some times you can even get your agent to pay for this). My company (and others) give a 10% discount for this as well. Saving 10% - 20% ($100 - $200) on $1000 a year out weights the cost of replacing a key a year ($80?). By the way how many key's have your employees lost? You could always fwd the cost (or deduct it) from the employee that lost the key. Just my 2 cents Jason

This from Usenet.... "I've heard that some people just take the chipped part of the key (they cut the key part off) and attach it in some fashion to the steering column (tape it to the column, mount it inside the column cover, etc). Since the chip is in the proper proximity then any key cut to the original key can be used. .... One thing about doing it this way is you don't have to pay anyone to disarm anything and it can be put back to normal again very easily." Now, why didn't we think of that? ;-)
