I don't have anything to cut and paste but here's what I did when I changed the plugs in mine (3.8L): - Unbolted the air filter top cover and loosened the hose clamp under the windshielf on the intake duct. Unplugged the mass air sensor and removed the sensor from the top air filter cover. I did this so I could remove the top cover and duct back to that hose clamp as one assembly. It makes it easier to get to the #2 and #3 plugs. - Unbolted the coil pack which sits behind the alternator. Also disconnected the wiring harness to it but left the plug wires connected. This let me move it out of the way to the left or right so I could get to the #1 and #2 plugs. - Removed one plug, set the new plug gap at .054 inch, installed the new plug tightening it to where it is just snug (Haines book specifies 7-15 ft/lbs of torque if I recall correctly). Don't overtighten else you risk tearing the threads out of the aluminum head at the next change. Move to the next plug, repeat. Push the plug wires on just until you feel a click. - Reinstall the parts I unbolted and removed. Fire up the engine to make sure everything works. Follow my instructions at your own success or peril. Also, the manual states to replace the plug wires at 60K miles too. Rad Eddy

See my message number 743 from September 2002 for what I did to get to the rear bank our our 1996 3.0L Windstar. Although Haynes says to get them from underneath, this is impossible. I ended up removing the wipers and associated cowling, then reaching over the top of the engine. Be careful of the vacuum lines on the EGR. I broke one. Replacing the plug wires is a good idea too. We recently had the No. 1 plug wire fail, and I had to take the wipers off all over again to get it. Mark

Because of the difficulty in changing the plugs on both the Windstar and the Aerostar I recommend ALWAYS replacing the plug wires. While you can certainly go with the $18 "guaranteed for life" AutoZone/Advanced/PepBoy/Kragen wire sets you'll have WAY less trouble with the $45-60 Ford set. Remember, the Ford set GOT you to the 100-150k mark. Will that $18 set?

Definitely. All those cheap "guaranteed for life" parts mean that you're guaranteed to keep replacing them frequently for the life of the car. Not worth it. Brake pads/rotors especially. Mark

Much thanks to all in this user group. The changing of the plugs was text book. I did it during one of Presidential debates which really help make the time go by quickly. Disassembling the wipers and cowling weren't as hard as originally imagined. Once you get going, it comes apart fairly quickly. No specialized tools were required. Pulling the plugs were also as advertised. Lay ontop of the engine, reach around and have at it. The front 3 were a breeze. Plug wires were also changed as recommended. My 95 Windstar runs like a champ now. It use to misfire when started, but that's now just a memory. Thanks All!
