As some of you know, the base/se have speed limiters. My 1995 is at 115mph and I heard that someone's 1993 was at 110mph. This could seriously cramp some style if I went turbo. Imagine it: Killing a Mustang GT off the line and 200 feet before the finish, your fuel pump says "no!". What can be done? - john weaver -- jweaver@... | don't be a sheep, people eat sheep.

I never noticed a speed limiter on my 95 SE. I have had it up to ~125mph racing my friends Grand Am which cuts out at 120mph. According to my Chilton's the second generation GT cuts fuel out at 7500 rpm and the base/SE model cuts out at 7800. I don't know how true this is and it sounds kind of backward to me seeing as though the 2.5L redlines at 7000 and the 2.0L redlines at 6500. Besides the rev-limiter I don't know of any other kind of speed limiter or govener. Adding a turbo to your 2.0 would most likely over ride the stock computers speed limiter. It would also bump the rev limiter further into the danger zone. Which is why upgrading those internals would be a wise decision (pistons, rods, etc.) Usually when adding a turbo, you upgrade you fuel system/ignition sytem, intake, tranny, and exhaust. And any wise performance enthusiast would have their ECU, the key player, reprogrammed. My cousins Civic would shut down at 114mph, after turbocharging amongst other things, he took his foot off of the gas pedal around 130mph! I've witnessed it. I do not understand how adding a turbo will do anything to the speed govenor programmed into the ECU. The only solution I am aware of it to reprogram ECU. If you are interested in an fairly inexpensive ECU reprogram contact ELP Performance. The cost of the CPU tune is $235 plus freight. Since it is a reprogram, you must mail your PCM to them. The turn around is 2-3 days once they recieve the PCM. They do offer a 100% money back gaurantee, so if you are not satified you can send it back and they will reprogram it to stock and refund your money, minus freight. This reprogram does remove the speed limiter also, not the rpm limiter, though you can have it changed to something else. ELP quotes, "There is a strong 12hp performance gain. ?Torque is also up 18-22lbs. ?This a gain you can feel in the seat of the pants. If ?you add some of the other bolt on you mentioned expect more hp." I will certainly agree with upgrading the internals, though after reading my tech manual, I was left with the impression that Ford/Mazda designed the 2.0L motor to be pretty "heavy" for duribility purposes, but there is really know way to determine without cracking open the engine. Hmmmm.....I tried to go really fast in my base probe once . Im scared of tickets so ill never do it again for a long time. Anyways mine was at 115 mph at about 5200 rpm. i had an exit to get off at so i had to slow . it seemed as if it would have gone faster. JIM 94 base probe

My '93 PSE's top speed is 110mph. I found out that all 2liter Probes have a speed limiter. From what I've read, it's there for safety reasons because the stock tires that come with base Probes and PSE's are only V-rated (has a 112mph rating). SO MAKE SURE YOU UPGRADE YOUR TIRES BEFORE YOU TRY DRIVING YOUR PROBE AT THESE SPEEDS. I've posted the question (in the past)asking how the speed limitter works and how to remove it. I found out that it was the program on the ePROM chip of the ECU (Emission Control Unit I think) that controls this. Replacing the chip with some "performance" chip like SuperChips will either raise or even eliminate the top speed limit. -Lino Sacman Hmmm....I tried to go really fast in my base probe once . Arrrgh! Sorry guys for my last message and the repeat info. I wrote that last message before I knew of the existence of related/prior email. I'm just not receiving email from this list! I'm having to actually post this message on the eGroups message board via my web browser. This sucks... -Lino Sacman

My car will do 114 mph with the limiter. DOES ANYONE KNOW WHAT WE DO TO CHANGE THIS TO SOMETHING HIGHER? I asked this months ago on the Probe Performance page and got no reply. Nestor Evancevich

try contacting Jet computer upgrades and see if they can modify your stock ECU to remove the speed limiter. ive heard of them being able to do this on other cars but never about the probe- if you check let me know. Ben Messina 94 Base
