I think what he means by hit the end of the spindle is between the bearing races, and also not on the actual locking nut threads. If I read that right, basically, what you do is take a nice 3lb sledge, and work your way around the spindle, working it out of the knuckle. after it slips out a little, you can get some kind of pry bar in there and again, work your way around until it pops free.

Just my 2 cents,
David

You have to replace the spindles if you're going to install discs. Drum brake spindles won't work.

I have a complete frontend off of a '77, all disc brake hardware and some spare parts to boot. It's these spindles I can't get off. I'm not worried about the drum spindles. Thanks.

ohhh you want to save the spindles, then take off the whole knuckle but popping out the ball joints then you can put the kunckle in a vise or something and hit the spindle out from the back, its got a nice big lip on it that you can hit, and not damage it

Do you suggest cutting through the balljoint with a saw or cutoff tool?

I thought you had to pull the spindle, then the shaft out, then pop the knuckle off. I have a balljoint tool. I think I know what you meen. Start the bottom one then the top one and you should be able to tilt it off. Correct? Thanks.

I can't get either spindles off. I just keep soaking them with penatrating fluid and beating on them with a rubber mallet or a block of wood. I thought by now that one of them would've come off. Thats why I suggested cutting through the balljoints with a saw. P.S. I even tried using a torch to heat it up a little, but no luck.

i think you should do a price check then and find out whats cheaper to pressin new balljooints or replace the spindles, becasue if you use like a 5lb sledge and hit then there is a chance you will fuck them up, but if your carful you might not hurt them, i mean the spindle is only pressed into the knuckle about 1 inch, but mine were a pain in the ass as well

Good luck
Mark

I would much rather replace balljoints, probably need changing anyway. I thought that if I cut through the joints I would take the knuckle to a machine shop and have them press the spindles out. Thanks for your help.
