Anyone else experienced problems with the rear calipers/parking brake cable failing to release properly? Our 91 GT has suffered persistent problems with the R. rear unit. Backing out the adjuster seemed to work for awhile. I recently replaced the rear pads and wound up taking off the entire caliper trying to free up the actuation lever for the parking brake. After working in some PB Blaster and WD-40, it seemed to operate freely. Now after just a few days, the problem has returned and the brakes are siezed. It this a common problem and if so, does anyone have any suggestions or remedies for the situation?

Heng, Thanks for the reply. This past weekend the weather was cold and the R.rear brake was locked up again in the morning. Later in the day, when the temperature had warmed up, it was free. A closer examination of the parking brake cable revealed a crack on the underside of the cable, just forward of the point where the cable attaches to the bracket on the caliper. This crack allowed water to seep down into the cable where it froze, locking the actuation lever in place. After removing the entire cable, a second crack was found approx. 12 inches further toward the front of the cable. Since the cable is designed to be sealed unit, any moisture or road grit getting into the inner surfaces would lead to corrosion and poor cable function. It further appears the cable was damaged sometime prior our ownership, most likely the last time the rear pads were replaced. If the parking brake cable is not disconnected from the mounting bracket prior to swiveling the caliper upward when changing pads, the bending action on the cable will cause it to break at the point described above. A new cable runs around $75.00 from Ford. Parts America lists on for $37.00. I have order the later but have not received it yet, so I cannot vouch as to whether this will an exact OEM replacement part.
