ok...I have a very stupid question. What is the difference in 10w-30 and 5w-20 oil? I was reading some previous posts and saw that the 5w-20 is what I should use. I change the oil in my 1965 mustang myself, and was going to do the same with my ZX3, I didn't see the type oil needed in the door jam anywhere (like the manual said it would be there, but it wasnt, the manual also said the rec. tire pressure would be there too but it wasnt either) So since I couldn't get an answer I already bought a case of 10w-30. I guess I could take it back...but what exactly would it do to put the wrong type in? I know it's a stupid question but I'm kinda new to everything...Although the simple fact that I can change my own oil and change a tire sets me apart from over half the female population! Anyways...help?!!

~Beth

Ok first when an oil says its 5w-20 thats its viscosity or weight. The 5 means it is 5 weight when at operating temperature and the 20 is the oils weight when cold. Ford recommends 5w-20 because it gives the best gas mileage and also the bearing clearances are very tight on that specific engine. Using too thick of an oil might not allow the oil to flow through the engine and cause serious damage, but also it takes a pretty big difference in viscosity to cause that damage. I am a technician so of course I recommend motorcraft parts and yes i do recommend 5w-20 oil but the choice is yours. I like to inflate my tires to around 28-30 for normal driving and around 23-25 when at the strip.

Hey Cinnabunny, if you live in a warm area and you drive your car hard then use the 10w30 and you won't damage your engine or void your warranty. The 5w20 is more for mileage than anything else. I have 22,000 on my ZX3 and I use Mobil 1 synthetic (10w30) I drive the car very hard and want the added protection the higher viscosity provides. Just don't use cheap oil. Use a name brand such as Mobil or Havoline. Castrol makes a good oil also.
