Isn't the Cobra motor a 5.4L, or am I mistaken? You can simply buy a crate motor, it'll cost, but you get a brand new motor, not one that is used form a Cobra, and yes you would have to change out the computer chip to take advantage of the new motor. stomachbile2000

The engine in the cobra is a 4,601cc/280cid or 4.6L 4v (# of valves per cyl, ours being a 2v) Saleen has a 5.4L option depending on which stage you purchase. As far as a complete cobra motor you can go directly to www.performanceparts.ford.com, go to complete engines and go from there as there are many to chose from, the one you are looking for is not yet available, but is very similar to this one M-6007-SC46** http://www.performanceparts.ford.com/parts/part_details.asp? PartKeyField=6374 , at a little over $12,000 with tax The non-supercharged version is almost half that M-6007-M146* http://www.performanceparts.ford.com/parts/part_details.asp? PartKeyField=6229 , at &5,800. With either of these you would want to beef-up the transmission, here is a place to look at that: http://www.ford-aode.com/ The interceptor would be sufficient a $1899.00, but you can go all out for $2339.00 in the extreme. Well, as if you haven't spent enough money, the IRS (rear) needs to be able to handle all of this extra power too, so you need to build that up, as I haven't had to do that yet, here is yet another point in the right direction http://www.strangeengineering.net/catalog/index.html Well hope that helps, if not atleasted satisfied your curiousity, not including time effort an labor, your looking at about $10,000.

Ofcourse, but you haven't been able to buy one since 2000, and even then they only made 300 of them. Butt if you went to one of the links there in there

It may be cheaper to get a 4.6 from a Lincoln Mark 8 (I have found the prices cheaper for the mark motor vs. the stang cobra motor. Don't know why, same engine) and adding a super charger. I knew of a junk yard in FL that sold the 4.6 32 valve with trans, wiring harness, and computer for $2500 Just my 2 cents worth, Jack

In addition to things you may want to consider: The wire harness will require some changes, IE; connector & wire extensions. Be sure to have a bottle of motrin available. As for the PCM, you are in luck as both cars have 104-pin computers; However, once you jump this hurdle you will be faced with tunning - meaning new programming must be "flashed" to your chip (Around 400-500.00 bucks) and a couple hours on the dyno. Then, of course there is the fuel system to consider. I believe the 97 Bird has a return-style fuel system. The 4.6 DOHC SC has a returnless. An issue I am currently trying to figure out with my current project, swapping my 95 4.6 with a 2002 Saleen S281SC in my Bird. Good luck! Mike
